A teacher who allegedly assaulted pupils at Boitumelong High School in Tembisa, on the East Rand, has been given a notice of intention to suspend him, the Gauteng education department said on Friday.

A video of the incident was posted on Facebook.

It took place at one of the schools chosen by Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi to be paperless, with wi-fi, interactive boards and tablets for pupils.

"It [the incident] came to the department's attention two weeks ago, before Easter," provincial education spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said.

"We have given the educator notice of intention to suspend. He has until today [Friday] to respond."

The video shows a teacher talking to two teenage male pupils at the front of the classroom, near the interactive boards.

He then kicks at one of the pupils, and several of the other pupils in the class respond with laughter.
