Joost’s family ‘devastated but strong’ as tributes pour in for rugby legend

Joost van der Westhuizen's family are "strong under the circumstances", his J9 Foundation said in a statement.

Confirming the sad news of the rugby legend's death on Monday, the organisation said Joost's family is "devastated at the loss".

"This is a great loss to so many around the world and the family would like to extend their greatest gratitude for the love and support shown over this difficult time."

Joost, who had been battling motor neuron disease (MND), was rushed to hospital on Saturday 4 February as a result of his respiratory muscles weakening, the organisation said.

"Joost fought a hard seven years with a failing body whilst his mind remained unaffected. Joost is survived by his two children, Jordan and Kylie, his parents, Gustav and Mariana as well as his two brothers, Pieter and Gustav and their families." Tributes poured in for Joost across social media platforms on Monday afternoon.
