Julia Roberts' mother has died.

Betty Lou Motes passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning at the age of 80 at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California, In Touch Weekly reported.

She had been battling lung cancer.

The tragedy came at a particularly hard time for the family. It was a little over a year to the day that Betty's daughter Nancy Motes – Julia's half-sister – committed suicide, on February 9, 2014.

According to reports, Betty moved in with her Oscar-winning daughter, her husband Danny Moder and the couple's three children – twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, ten, and Henry, seven – at their Malibu home following Nancy's death.

It was previously reported by The National Enquirer in early 2014 that doctors had found a "cancerous tumour" on Betty's lung during a routine MRI scan in November 2013.

Prior to the diagnosis, Betty had suffered a heart attack and underwent an angioplasty in 2009.

According to the publication, surgery to treat a condition in her back delayed her lung cancer treatment, much to the concern of her family.

"Everyone was frantic because Betty has a history of smoking and emphysema," a source told the magazine at the time.

Julia's father, Walter Roberts, also passed away from cancer when the actress was just ten years old.

Addressing the audience at a Stand Up to Cancer benefit in 2012, Julia spoke fondly of the father she barely knew. She revealed that she feels his loss even more now that she's a parent herself.

"I don't remember his illness, really, but I remember him so dearly and vividly," she reminisced. "That's where you feel the real ripoff. He's not here to be a grandparent."

The 47-year-old has yet to comment on her mother's passing.
