Actress Kate Hudson doesn't believe in maintaining a relationship for the sake of what people consider a traditional family set up.

The 36-year-old ended her engagement to Muse singer Matt Bellamy, the father of her son Bingham, in December. The Almost Famous star is also mum to 11-year-old son Ryder from her marriage to rocker Chris Robinson, and, despite both relationships not working out, Kate insists she is happy being a single mum to her two boys. "It's hard to let go of something, even when you know that it's not right,” she told the American edition of Harper's Bazaar. “I’ve chosen something in my life that I'm very comfortable with that goes against a lot of people's more traditional feelings.

'I believe that there are different ways to raise children'

"If something's not right, I don't believe in maintaining something for the sake of what's considered a traditional family, because I believe that there are different ways to raise children. It's far more effective to raise children in happy homes."

Kate has spoken in the past of how hard it has been at times for the family after her split from Matt but nearly a year on, she is very content with her life and is in no rush to fall into another relationship.

The star was rumoured to be dating Jealous singer Nick Jonas earlier this year but Kate insists she is single and is enjoying life.

"I really do feel very lucky,” she said. “I’ve had my kids and my relationships. I've set my life down — I’m in my house, and I'm alone with my children — and I'm at peace, and that's a really nice feeling. All I really want in my life is to maintain that.

"It's nice to get acquainted with myself alone, you know, the goal when you get into a relationship is not to be out of the relationship. It's to try to stay in the relationship. But if it doesn't work, you can't force those things."
