Kate Winslet is "extremely surprised" to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award just days after welcoming her third child.

The 38-year-old actress, who gave birth to a nine-pound (4 kg) baby boy with her third husband, Ned Rocknroll, in Sussex, England, last Saturday, is up for Best Actress in a Drama for her performance in Labor Day at the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles next month.

The British star, who also has a nine-year-old son, Joe, with ex-husband Sam Mendes, and a daughter, Mia (13), with ex-husband Jim Threapleton, told UsMagazine.com, "I'm extremely surprised and absolutely thrilled to be included this year! Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association."

12 Years a Slave and American Hustle lead the 2014 nominations with seven nods each. The latter stars Jennifer Lawrence, who’s up for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture and is happy the movie has been so well received.

She said, "This is so exciting. I'm thrilled that the film received so many nominations and that I get to share this with the rest of the cast."

Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom star Idris Elba, who scored two nominations (one for his role in the movie, the other for his role in UK TV series Luther), paid tribute to the late Nelson Mandela after hearing the news of the nominations this morning.

He said, "I'm truly humbled and honoured to be acknowledged for two projects that, though very different from one another, are both extremely personal and special to me. Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press for your support, and I would also like to give a special thank you to Mr Mandela, who will be forever missed."

Elsewhere, Leonardo DiCaprio, who’s up for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for The Wolf of Wall Street, said, "I'm truly honoured to be nominated by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association today. Making Wolf of Wall Street was one of the highlights of my career. Thank you again to the HFPA for their support."

The Golden Globes ceremony – aired by NBC – will take place on 12 January, and will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
