Kirsten Dunst: People expect too much of actors

Kirsten Dunst has slammed the “totally ridiculous” level of expectations placed on actors.

The 33-year-old star began her career by starring in commercials when she was just three, and she has worked steadily since then. She’s seen much change over the years, not least the level of scrutiny people in her profession are placed under.

“What people expect of an actor is totally ridiculous,” she told Town & Country magazine. “It’s unfair that an artist is expected to speak really well in public and have skin tough enough to withstand sometimes really hurtful criticism, but also, in order to do the job, be really sensitive and in touch with their feelings.”

While she finds it highly irritating, Kirsten has developed ways to deal with this double standard. The easiest way to cope is to be entirely herself and never pretend to have certain thoughts or feelings.

The star also weighed in on the topic of sexism in the industry, something actresses such as Gemma Arterton and Emma Thompson have also spoken about recently. Kirsten believes there is still work to do, although she is glad to see some things changing. When she was shooting her 2002 and 2004 Spider-Man films she felt like work was a very male-dominated place, but over the last few years there has been a shift.

“The older I get, the less I feel that way. What I’ve found is that the cool guys now want to hang out with the cool girls,” she explained.

The star also touched on her private life, taking a few minutes to gush about her boyfriend Garrett Hedlund. The couple have been dating since 2012 after they appeared in On the Road together, and things have gone from strength to strength.

"We've been together for three and a half years, so, yes, it's going really well. We're the same age. We have similar backgrounds," she explained. "He feels like family to me."
