Animated fantasy.

2011. 87 min.

Voices: Jack Black, Angelina Jolie and Gary Oldman.

Director: Jennifer Yuh.

Rating: 4/5

This beautifully animated film is one of those rare instances where the sequel improves on the original – the story is more complex, the villain more sinister and the action sequences more impressive.

The plot focuses on a niggling question not addressed in the first film: why is Po (voiced byBlack) the panda’s father a goose? Po has been accepted by the furious five kung fu champions as the dragon warrior, but something is still missing in his life and he longs to know where he came from.

Meanwhile an evil peacock (Oldman) is bent on enslaving all of China with the use of his new invention, gunpowder, and it’s up to Po and his friends to stop him.

The exploration of Chinese culture and history sets this movie apart and director Jennifer Yuh’s use of various stunning animation styles turns it into a work of art. An engaging adventure that’s a cut above the rest.

Bonus: lots, including featurettes and deleted scenes.
