No school holiday is complete without sweet treats. Today in our holiday blog: Let the kids decorate a cake and whip up their own mini mud pies, cookie paint and edible mud.

175 g butter

1 tablespoon cocoa

½ cup caster sugar

125 g mixed chopped dried fruit such as raisins

200 g biscuits (any kind), crushed

200 g chocolate

1 Melt butter in a saucepan.

2 Add cocoa and caster sugar.

3 Add chopped dried fruit and crushed biscuits.

4 Mix well. The mixture will be crumbly.

5 Press the biscuit mixture into flexible ice cube trays in a variety of shapes.

6 Use a wooden spoon to press the mixture down firmly – the mixture will be crumbly but will set when it’s chilled.

7 Put the ice cube trays in the fridge and chill for about 2 hours.

8 Break chocolate into pieces and melt in the microwave oven or in a bowl over gently simmering water.

9 Pop the mini pies out of the trays and place them on a plate.

10 Pour the melted chocolate over the pies and spread it evenly.

TIP Instead of baking mini mud pies, you could bake a large mud pie in a round pie dish. First line the dish with foil.

Let the kids help decorate a cake – they’ll love it! Keep it simple by using a supermarket-bought Madeira or sponge cake. Put a variety of cake decorations in small bowls and give the kids free rein to express their creativity.

Make cookie paint to decorate or paint cookies. Mix 1 egg yolk, ¼ teaspoon water and plenty of food colouring. Use the mixture to paint cookies as soon as they come out of the oven. Return to the oven and heat until the egg yolk has set.

Mix 500 g peanut butter, 6 tablespoons honey and enough low-fat milk powder to give the mixture the consistency of dough or clay. Add a little cocoa if desired. Let your child make shapes from the mixture and decorate them before eating them.
