The Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg has extended condolences to the family and friends of the 14-year-old girl who died in an apparent suicide.

"It is with shock that the school community learned of the sudden passing of Klara Göttert. The school would like to express its heartfelt sympathy with Klara's family," principal Thomas Bachmeier said in a letter posted on the website of the school, where Klara was a pupil.

Classmates and fellow learners were receiving support from school psychologists, he added. "We thank you for all the interest and sympathy shown through the numerous messages and enquiries. Out of consideration for the family the school will not be in a position to give further information." A Facebook message that Göttert had gone missing was shared nearly 6 000 times on Tuesday but her mother, Liesl, later updated her Facebook page to say the teenager had died.

Police said she died from a fall at the Northgate mall, north of Johannesburg, and her body was found between 19:00 and 20:00.

Her mother was later quoted as saying her daughter had committed suicide, while her aunt posted on Facebook that "life became too much for her and it seems she couldn't see a way out".

Her mother later posted, "The funeral for our precious Klara Gottert will be held at Aasvoëlkop Dutch Reformed church (the congregation that was formerly headed by Rev. Beyers Naudé) in Nortcliff, Johannesburg at 2pm on Saturday, 15 August 2015."
