Daniel Johnson stabbed David Wilson to death in his apartment while David was sleeping.

A man has been sentenced to life in prison for brutally slaughtering a man and then using his phone to call the police to ask for a lift home.

Daniel Johnson stabbed David Wilson to death in his apartment while David was sleeping on 14 December 2014.

Following his crime, Daniel (then 21) called 999 and requested a lift from Sunderland, England, where he attacked the 49-year-old with a knife, to his home in Gateshead.

“I don’t have a clue how I’m getting home,” he told the operator in the call, which was recorded and played during his trial in the Newcastle Crown Court.

"I live in Gateshead. I was at a house party and I missed the last Metro."

The court heard that Daniel was indeed at a house party, where he was pictured pouring alcohol into his eyes.

Intoxicated, he left the party and came across David’s partner, who left the flat to pick up takeaways.

After a failed attempt to rob David’s partner, Daniel stole the keys to the flat, where he took a knife from the kitchen and stabbed his sleeping victim through the bed sheets.

He then made the phone call to emergency services.

After his 999-call, Daniel walked along train tracks to Seaburn Metro Station, where he dumped the phone.

“It was a vicious and savage attack on a defenseless man,” said Mr Justice Males, before handing down the 23-year jail sentence.

“It is clear from the defensive injuries to his hands, which David Wilson sustained, that for at least part of the attack he was awake and conscious of what you were doing to him.

“David Wilson was a 49-year-old man with a loving family. Since leaving school he had a number of jobs and also served for some six or seven years as a special constable with Northumbria Police.

“His murder has had a profound and traumatic effect on his entire family, as his daughter has movingly described.”
