Lupita Nyong’o, who was born in Mexico to Kenyan parents, and raised in Kenya, caught the proverbial eye of the world, when she was selected to play the slave Patsey in critically acclaimed 12 Years a Slave.

For her performance, Lupita won the 2014 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, among numerous other awards and nominations.

In an interview with People, Lupita said, "It was exciting and just a major, major compliment ... I was happy for all the girls who would see me on [the cover] and feel a little more seen."

The magazine has been naming the world’s 50 most beautiful celebrities since 1990. Michelle Pfeiffer was the first beauty to grace the cover for the special award.

Lupita’s mother was always encouraging about her daughter, and “always said I was beautiful. And I believed it,” she said.
