Mad Mel! Mr Not-So-Nice Guy

His professional life is spotless, his personal life a mess.

Yet Mel Gibson is one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed actors and directors. He gained fame as the leather-clad biker in Mad Max, then as an LA detective in Lethal Weapon.

But over the years he has made headlines for the wrong reasons: alcohol addiction, contemplating suicide as a victim of bipolar disorder, homophobia and anti-Semitism.

Now he’s in the public dog box again. The 54-year-old star has deserted his girlfriend five months after she gave birth to their daughter, Lucia. He ‘‘drifted apart’’ from Russian pianist Oksana Grigorieva (39) soon after she gave birth to their child, her says.

He’s believed to have walked out on her after an angry row in which she accused him of cheating on her and going back on his promise to marry her. It shouldn’t be a surprise – he once remarked, ‘‘Why would anyone get married twice?’’

Mel and Oksana began dating while he was married to his wife of 28 years, Robyn Moore, although they’d been separated for three years.

Robyn filed for divorce last year when Mel and Oksana made their relationship public. Mel is at risk of losing half of his $1-billion (about R7,5 billion) fortune to Robyn. They have seven children.

Hollywood insiders say it’s one of the most expensive divorces in history. The record holder is basketball star Michael Jordan, who settled with wife Juanita for $168 million (about R1,11 billion at the time) after their 2006 split.

In addition Mel might have to fork out $15 000 (about R112 500) a month in child support for baby Lucia.

But his personal life doesn’t seem to be denting this Oscar-winner’s career.

Mel is the lead in the thriller Edge of Darkness, his first movie appearance since 2002’s Signs. The film, in which he plays a detective investigating the murder of his daughter, will be released in SA on 7 May. Critics have already praised it, with one saying it offers ‘‘vintage Mel Gibson’’.
