Make a choo-choo train

Our daily blog has fun games or projects to keep kip kids busy during the school holidays. Today’s project: Build a choo-choo train.

Today we’re building a train from old shoe boxes and in the process we learn about recycling. The train is for playing with or for using as storage. You’ll need

  • Shoe box
  • Paint
  • Gift wrap to cover the box (optional)
  • 6 plastic lids or coloured paper cut into 6 rounds for the wheels
  • Craft glue
  • Scissors or NT cutter
  • Paper cup
  • Fibre-tip black pen
  • Transparent container with lid, filled with Smarties or Astros
  1. Cover the shoe box or paint it. If the box has a loose lid, cover or paint it separately so the box can be opened and closed.
  2. Attach the wheels to the long sides of the box with craft glue.
  3. Cut the paper cup 5-6 cm from the bottom to make the front of the train engine. Paint it.
  4. Draw a face on the base of the paper cup with a fibre-tip pen. You could also download a face from the internet, reduce it in size and glue it to the bottom of the cup.
  5. Attach the paper cup bottom to a short side of the box.
  6. Put the transparent container upside down on the box to make a chimney.
TIP Use old Lego blocks to make an exhaust pipe; glue them to the opposite short side of the box with craft glue. SOURCE: YOU PLAY
