A guide dog has saved a blind man from dying after he fell onto train tracks.

Cecil Williams (61) of Brooklyn, New York has been blind since 1995. He fainted while standing on a New York subway platform and fell onto the tracks but fortunately his 10-year-old black Labrador managed to wake him up with seconds to spare.

Cecil, who only suffered a minor head injury thanks to his pet pooch, said: "I'm feeling amazed. I feel that God, the powers that be, have something in store for me. They didn't take me away this time."

After hearing the remarkable story the public raised more than $100 000 in order for Cecil to keep his dog, Orlando, when he retires after eight years in service.

"I'd like to say thank you, but I'm looking for some more words to describe how it feels ... it's a blessing, a miracle."
