Mark rocks Idols

With his long hair, piercing eyes and the way he immerses himself in music he’s like a South African version of Meatloaf.

He even has the same build and features as the US rocker.

“No, please don’t!” top 10 Idol Mark Haze (29) begs.

He can’t stand labels, says the singer who matriculated from The Settlers High School in Bellville, Cape Town, in 1999.

The TV recordings for the first Idols Spectacular at the Mosaïek Teatro in Randburg have just been completed. When he ended his song for the evening, Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, with his trademark long high notes the thunderous applause that followed provided ample proof that fans are mad about this singer from Durbanville in the Mother City.

It hasn’t yet sunk in that he’s in the top 10. He gets butterflies in his stomach whenever he says it out loud, Mark says with a cheeky grin.

Ten years ago it was a different story. He entered the competition in 2002 and 2003 but never made it beyond the first auditions. “I was told in no uncertain terms this was a pop competition and there was no room for rockers like me.”

His Idols dream was revived last year while he was on a working holiday in the United States, Mark says. He and his rock group, 12th Avenue, were touring the country.

“During the day we went from one tourist spot to the next and played in clubs in the evening to finance our trip. One day we were at Disney World where they had a kind of copy of American Idol. It was a fun  event but the winner could go through to the real Idols without doing any auditions.”

Mark’s wife, Shelley (30), whom he married in 2009 on the beach near Yzerfontein, persuaded him to take part. And he ended up winning!

“Unfortunately I couldn’t carry on with the competition because we had to come back to SA but it gave me the confidence to enter Idols again.”
