Giving your baby’s bedding that extra touch of love.

Tucked and gently snuggled in is our ultimate image of a baby in its nursery.

So when getting ready for the new arrival it’s often in the choice of our baby’s bedding that we can truly indulge ourselves – and of course the baby!

Creating a layette is one of the many delights in preparing for the new baby. Every expecting parent loves to arrange the charming bundles of blankets, sheets and quilts, imagining the little person who’ll be slumbering there soon.

If you’re adept at sewing now is the time to add something special like an appliquéd motif to a shop-bought blanket – if not, you can always commission someone.

Delicate MAIN

Detailing is so important when it comes to linen and bedding and needn’t be elaborate. The simplest details such as cross- or blanket-stitching or the addition of a satin ribbon can really lift a plain blanket or quilt.

There’s nothing sweeter than baby asleep in a cot. Personalising bed linen with monograms, embroidered messages, or appliqued designs is a lovely way to show your baby is special. A sweet, elegantly embroidered personal message and quote from a song or nursery rhyme adds to that loving touch.

Hand sewing can be hassle-free when mom-to-be is sitting with feet up in a comfy chair. Large, squidgy alphabet letters, in a simple running stitch, are easy enough for the novice seamstress. Add a felt heart for a personal touch. It’s the handmade theme that imbues this nursery with warmth and charm, as does a collection of old and new, including quilts, cottons and crocheted blankets with detailed textures and fringing.

Tip: Many cot bases can be raised to a higher setting for a newborn – but that can leave a large chasm under the cot. Make a simple box-frill and use the underside for extra storage.
