Mel Gibson toasted his latest Academy Awards nomination with his newborn son.

The movie star's baby news broke hours before Gibson, 61, picked up his first Oscar nomination since Braveheart, and he admits he was playing the proud dad when he heard his name had been mentioned among the Best Director nods on Tuesday morning.

"What could be more exciting than listening to the nominations being announced while holding my newborn son!" he said in a statement. "This is a truly wonderful honor."

A spokesman for the actor/director and his girlfriend Rosalind Ross officially announced the birth of the couple's baby son, Lars, just before the nominations were announced.

The child is Gibson's ninth.

The representative revealed former equestrian and writer Ross gave birth in Los Angeles on Friday.

"They're thrilled and Lars is adorable," the rep tells People. "Their family is all around them and Mel is over the moon. They're home and everybody is healthy and happy!"

Little Lars joins the Australian star's other children Hannah, 36, twin boys Christian and Edward, 34, William, 32, Louis, 28, Milo, 26, and Thomas, 16 - his kids from his marriage to ex-wife Robyn Moore - and six-year-old daughter Lucia, whose mother is Mel's ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva.

It was first reported that Ross, 26, was pregnant in September, when she appeared with Gibson at the premiere of his war film Hacksaw Ridge, which picked up six Academy Award nominations on Tuesday morning in Los Angeles, including Gibson's Best Director nod.

"I'm especially happy for Andrew Garfield, our producers Bill Mechanic and David Permut, our editor John Gilbert and our incredible sound teams," Mel added in his statement. "The Academy's recognition of our film is a testament to every single person who worked on Hacksaw Ridge, and to every soldier who made the sacrifices they made to fight for their country, including Desmond Doss."

The film chronicles the fortunes of pacifist Doss, a World War Two American Army Medic who refused to kill enemy soldiers while serving during the Battle of Okinawa. Doss, portrayed by Garfield in the film, became the first man in American history to receive the Medal of Honor without firing a shot.
