Minki’s macho man

She’s a girl who knows her cricket but these days you’re more likely to find Minki van der Westhuizen beside a rugby field. Not at Ellis Park, Loftus Versfeld or Newlands but somewhere in London where the players of Saracens rugby club run out.

Because one of their star players and sometime captain is Ernst Joubert, the man in whose strong arms the blonde model and presenter of SABC2 programme Pasella found happiness again after her divorce from Stellenbosch businessman Constant Visser.

Like Minki’s former love interests, Proteas captainGraeme Smith and Afrikaans singer Pieter Smith, Ernst is famous in his own right, having made a name for himself at the Gauteng Lions.

Although their romance has blossomed only in the past month or so they’ve travelled thousands of kilometres to be close to each other.

And it looks as if things are becoming serious fast because she’s just visited him in England, a trip that caused her to miss a Pasella function.

Minki (28) is the second Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Ernst (30) has dated. His ex-girlfriends include lingerie and swimsuit model Jenna Pietersen and Egoli actress Marguerite Wheatley.

The romance between Ernst and Minki started about a month ago, sources close to them say.

She and Constant were divorced last year after a two-year marriage.

An agent for Saracens players says he met Minki earlier this year at a braai at a rugby player’s house in St Albans near London. “There was clearly a spark between her and Ernst but that was a few months ago.”

Officially Minki won’t say a word about it. In the past she didn’t hesitate to appear on magazine covers with Graeme, Pieter or Constant but now she seems determined to keep her private life out of the spotlight.

But her agent, Andrew Farr, confirmed Minki is in a relationship. “She doesn’t mind talking about her career but after her divorce she doesn’t want to talk about her private life.”

Ernst also chooses his words carefully. “We are in a relationship. I don’t want to say anything at the moment except that it’s going super well,” he reveals in an SMS to a female friend.

A family friend says they’re serious about seeing each other – and aren’t deterred by the distance between England and South Africa.

“We all thought it was just a fling – he said it wasn’t serious but Ernst was clearly fibbing. The relationship was news to all of us.”

It’s certainly big news on Facebook where they’re making no secret of their blossoming relationship.

Minki writes on her Facebook page she’s in a relationship with Ernst Joubert.

He didn’t hesitate to change his Facebook status soon after they decided to make their relationship public.
