Scientists have discovered a way of recharging a mobile phone with urine.

Researchers at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory in the UK conducted an experiment in which urine reacted with several compounds, giving a Samsung device enough charge for someone to make a brief call on it, send a text or surf the internet.

Dr Ioannis Ieropoulos, from the University of the West of England, is quoted by the Royal Society of Chemistry journal as saying, "It's an exciting discovery.

"Using the ultimate waste product as a source of power to produce electricity is about as eco as it gets.

"Making a call on a mobile phone takes up the most energy but we will get to the place where we can charge a battery for longer periods."
