A 21-year-old woman from Erskine, Renfrewshire in the UK has been questioned by police after sharing a photo of a Down's Syndrome boy she was caring for in the washing machine.

Courtney Stewart has sparked international outrage with the controversial photo she posted on Facebook, which shows an adult's hand holding the toddler inside.

But Courtney, who is a mother herself, swears the two-and-a-half year old climbed in of his own accord, and it was all in good fun.

“He loves the washing machine," she told the Daily Record. "We took a picture and it was a laugh.”

Her neighbours reportedly called police out of concern for the little boy's safety.

“It was terrible to look at,” one neighbour said. “For anyone, let alone someone who is also a parent, to take a picture like that and stick it on Facebook for a laugh is unbelievable. It’s no wonder people are angry about it."

But Courtney has refused to apologise, and slammed whoever reported her to the police. Two officers questioned her for over an hour, but left without pressing charges.

"I think it’s absolutely ridiculous," she said. "“What did they think I was doing to him? Taking him for a spin?

“He’s got a bit of a washing obsession. Anyone who knows him would know he’s got a washing obsession."

She's since removed the picture from Facebook.
