What’s it about?

A bubbly, enthusiastic girl discovers at a young age she has cancer. She refuses however to let it get her down and confronts her situation head-on.

Who will enjoy it?

Soapie junkies who like to see emotion portrayed in melodramatic terms, with bubbly laughs interchanged with worried looks.

Kate Hudson has perfected this type of role – giggling businesswomen who remind of Kate’s mom,Goldie Hawn, and light up any room they walk into yet harbour secret, troubled thoughts.

The emotion is frequently overdone, like someone wearing too much make-up, but then, predictably, the mood is lightened by the appearance of a hunk – in this case Gael García Bernal, who appears quite uncomfortable in this piece of commercial entertainment.

The movie is like a chameleon on a box of Smarties – the tone, style and mood keep changing to keep audiences in their comfort zone and to get a reaction.

It’s a pity such a serious, tragic story is given such a superficial and at times even artificial treatment, because it creates entirely the wrong impression.

You might not want to get too depressed so early in the new year, but sales of tissues in theatre foyers are likely to shoot up. It’s also a pity all of Miss Hudson’s portrayals and roles are so similar these days. You miss her triumphant turn in Almost Famous!
