What’s it about?

A young man learns his father, who’s 75, is dying of cancer and has finally decided to come out as gay.

Who will enjoy it?

This movie isn’t for everyone and is likely to  be enjoyed only by adventurous film fans. It’s comfortable with its subject matter though and doesn’t make too much of the gay theme; it’s handled in an almost by-the-way, natural manner and avoids a comic angle. The human approach and underplayed warmth draw you in.

Beginners doesn’t blow its own trumpet or get on a soapbox, and unlike many other films with a gay theme there’s no anger.

So if you’re in the mood for a film that simply delivers entertainment without embarrassment this may be for you.

It takes a sympathetic look at the dilemma of a married father who has known all along he’s not heterosexual but decided to get married because all his friends did and because he wanted to have children.

The film also looks at how his decision affected his family.

Not all aspects of the film work though; Goran Visjnic as the old man’s lover is too over-the-top to convince.
