Alfred Hitchcock (Hopkins) is regarded as one of the greatest film directors of all time, even though he seldom received recognition in his lifetime for his genius and ground- breaking films. This sympathetic tribute gives some insight, although not always enough, into the causes of his neuroses, and explores his stormy relationship with his wife, Alma Reville (Mirren).

She was the power behind the throne, quietly rewriting her husband’s scripts, advising him and making unique suggestions that played a crucial role in his success. As Hitch’s career stagnated she stumbled upon Robert Bloch’s explicit novel Psycho and decided it should be filmed. The way in which brutality is portrayed in that film, and of course its shocking and celebrated shower scene, forever changed the status of the thriller genre.

This film also looks at Hitchcock’s voyeuristic tendencies and obsession with cold blondes, and shows how he dealt with his frustrations by portraying murders on screen. Director Gervasi pays respectful tribute to a great, brave filmmaker who wasn’t scared of anyone or anything, and the style of his film reminds in a small way of the atmosphere and black humour Hitch brought to his films. A must-see for film buffs.
