Beautiful cinematography and fine attention to detail make this movie a visual feast, but it’s not for everyone.

Rated: 3/5  Drama With Bill Murray, Laura Linney and Olivia Williams Director: Roger Michell 10PG Opens 15 March

Unlike in America, Lincoln didn’t do too well at the SA box office and this intimate film is even less likely to be a success locally. However, those looking for more sophisticated, historical entertainment than the weak Red Dawn or cool Warm Bodies will find this film enriching. It’s based on real events and tells the story of the relationship between US president Franklin D Roosevelt (Bill Murray) and his distant cousin, Daisy Suckley (Laura Linney). Their secret love was revealed during an eventful weekend in 1939 when King George VI (played by Colin Firth in The King’s Speech, played here by Samuel West) and his wife, Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Coleman), stayed at the Roosevelts’ country estate. Not only did this lead to a close bond between Britain and America that carried the two countries through World War 2, but Roosevelt’s humanity and sharp insight also helped the king improve his self-image. There are light comic moments but they’re tempered by irony and the audience’s awareness of what’s coming. – LEON VAN NIEROP
