You won’t see a wilder, grittier movie this year and Woody Harrelson’s tough-as-nails, brutally racist policeman character could just make your popcorn lose its crunch.

This relentlessly tough drama set in Los Angeles in the ’90s is about Dave Brown, a feared and violent cop (a faultless performance by Harrelson) who’s caught on camera beating up a suspect.

The film takes a bewitching, determined look at his self-destruction.

Shot with handheld cameras there are montages reminiscent of the drug sequences in Requiem for a Dream.

Seeing this unbending ruffian getting his soul caught on razor wire is enough to make you run from the theatre. He boasts he’s old-school – the type of guy who can fix anything with his fists while looking the other way when his colleagues take bribes from drug dealers.

But he’s dedicated to his two daughters, one of whom is seriously maladjusted.

He has sex with anything with a pulse in scenes that see Harrelson descend into a spiritual hell as he tries to survive in a world that’s as sick as he is. The violence is revolting yet fascinating; like walking over a bed of hot coals. And Robin Wright is brilliant.
