What’s it about?

A group of 14th-century Crusaders accompany a witch in a cage to a monastery to punish her for the Black Plague which they believe she brought upon the world.

Who will enjoy it?

If the recent The Eagle with pretty boy Channing Tatum disappointed you and you’re still in the mood for a historical film with lots of action and fighting, this flick, although not as entertaining or well done as Thor, may appeal to you.

Nicolas Cage, with that mad glint in his eye, manages to carry this film about religious fears and intolerance squarely on his shoulders, while the director succeeds in evoking sympathy for the gorgeous witch.

There are some harrowing scenes such as a collapsing bridge that will have anyone who suffers from vertigo reaching for the Calmettes, and the journey to the monastery is filled with every conceivable disaster and over-the-top danger.

The film is more entertaining than its poster may suggest so, in spite of it getting just two stars, it’s a slightly better option than similar films.

It’s rough, overly dramatic in places and often disturbing. Recommended to anyone who enjoys tough, uncompromising movies.
