What’s it about?

It’s the true story of surfer Bethany Hamilton who continued to take part in the sport even after losing an arm in a shark attack.

Who will enjoy it?

Anyone who complains that you don’t get good, clean family movies any more. And, of course, sports fans and surfers.

Sean McNamara’s direction reflects his great admiration for this brave young girl who wouldn’t allow Jaws to get her down and the movie is a glowing, almost lyrical tribute to her.

On one hand it’s good to honour someone with such a courageous, fearless approach to life, who tackles obstacles head-on.

It’s an inspiration for viewers and a must-see for anyone going through a crisis who feels there’s no hope. On the other hand it would have been nice to see a bit more of Bethany’s family’s struggle against this overwhelming event.

The film creates the impression the director glamorised the events to some extent.

However AnnaSophia Robb shows she’s one of Hollywood’s most exciting young talents and Ross Thomas provides solid support in his role as her older brother. Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt sadly don’t quite convince as surfers though.

Inspirational, gripping, clean family entertainment – even if it’s a bit glamorised.
