Sci-fi adventure.

With Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Joel Courtney and Gabriel Basso.

Director: JJ Abrams.

Rating: 4/5

What’s it about?

A bunch of tween boys and a cool girl make a home movie – but when they accidentally film a gruesome train crash it changes their lives.

Who will enjoy it?

Steven Spielberg junkies and JJ Abramsgroupies will tell you this is one of the few films to approach the charm of Spielberg’s movies of the ’80s.

This time he’s the producer but his influence is unmistakeable. The film vibrates with passion and nostalgia for when the pair were young and innocent, trying to find their way personally and as filmmakers.

This adventure turns into a breathtaking sci-fi caper – one of the best of its kind. It reminds of the way people in the ’50s were obsessed with monsters from outer space.

The youngsters’ adventures are beautifully captured by Abrams (and Spielberg) and will fuel the imagination of anyone who dreams of one day making something of themselves and perhaps becoming filmmakers.

Yet it’s also about encountering your first love and torn families that are eventually reunited.

The special effects are cool and dynamic and the story wraps itself around you like a silkworm’s cocoon.

Excellent entertainment for old and young!

Popcorn facts

Like the heroes of Super 8, JJ Abrams started making movies as a boy using an 8-mm camera.

Steven Spielberg asked Abrams and Matt Reeves (Super 8’s co-producer) to edit the 8-mm films he’d shot as a teen. It was the beginning of a lifelong friendship.

All three filmmakers contributed to the script which is based on the sci-fi movies of the ’50s.

The town Lilian was named after JJ Abrams’s grandmother, Lillie.
