Romantic drama.

Opens 25 May.

Oh dear! Sniffles, tears and tissues are the order of the day with this saccharin, tearjerking slab of mediocrity from Nicholas Sparks.

He’s the writer of melodramas such as beautiful romance The Notebook but has also been responsible for less successful novels such as Dear John

and The Last Song.

Zac Efron sleepwalks his way through The Lucky One as a Marine who returns from Iraq where he nearly died on his last tour of duty. He carries with him a picture he found of a woman he believes brings him luck. He goes to meet this blonde (Taylor Schilling) and of course they fall in love. It’s predictable junk-food fare, the type of flick you’d take a blind date to because you know exactly what you’re in for.

From the third act you know how this old-fashioned, tired story told with pretty pictures will end. It’s so formulaic even McDonald’s would be impressed!

Efron doesn’t work in this role; he’s uncomfortable as a macho Marine with a past. And Blythe Danner should be paid extra to play a stereotypical granny who merely has to make the right noises in the right places.

Only for people in love who seldom go to the movies.
