Legendary writer Hunter S Thompson died at 67 after an eventful life. The 1998 movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (also the title of one of his books) provided some insight into his bizarre mind.

Johnny Depp, who plays Thompson, greatly admires him and after his death stumbled upon his novel The Rum Diary, which has now been turned into a film with Depp as co-producer.

It’s a quirky, eccentric experience and it takes some effort to fathom Thompson’s macabre life.

You have to be in the right mood – chilled and laidback enough – to see what his unique world was all about, but you also have to pay attention to get your money’s worth.

The adaptation doesn’t entirely succeed – Thompson’s slinky style is just too by-the-way, free and undisciplined to involve viewers.

It’s about an uninhibited, eccentric journalist (perhaps Thompson himself?) who ends up as a freelancer on a newspaper in Puerto Rico, having been fired by several other publications. There he meets people who make his life even more absurd.

Only if you’re in a truly adventurous mood and enjoy bungee-jumping without a rope.
