It might not be Allen at his best but it’s still fun and funny

Rating: 3/5

Romantic comedy.

With Woody Allen, Penélope Cruz, Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page and Judy Davis.

Director: Woody Allen.

Opens 24 August.

You have to be in the right frame of mind to appreciate Woody Allen’s movies. Many younger flick fans find his style

of comedy hard to understand, cynical and dry, but the more of life and love’s ups and downs you’ve experienced the

more you find comfort in his quirky films.

His latest might not be as razor-sharp as Midnight in Paris but it’s still as refreshing as a cold shower in the heat of

the desert.

This time he combines four romantic tales set in famous places in Rome, and for readers who love the city it will feel as if they’re on holiday there – except they’ll giggle as they throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain.

The four stories aren’t equally successful and at times Allen loses his grip on the jokes and witty lines, something he’s not often guilty of. But when he’s on form he’ll have you shaking with laughter. And just to see him and Judy Davis once again sharing the screen makes this film worth the ticket price.
