Dark comedy.

With Charlize Theron, Patrick Wilson and Patton Oswalt.

Director: Jason Reitman.

Opens 13 April.

Who’d have thought our Charlize could be so common, obstreperous and loud! This quirky comedy by Diablo Cody, who also wrote the unconventional Juno, surprises with its naughty one-liners and unique approach to growing up.

Charlize, who gives an outstanding performance (why no Oscar nomination?), plays a frustrated woman who returns to her hometown to try to seduce the virile man with whom she’d been in love.

The only problem is he’s married. Will she destroy a happy marriage for her own gain and satisfaction?

The movie gets under the skin of women who refuse to accept responsibility and just don’t want to grow up.

But note, the humour is dark and cruel. It’s not a laugh-a-minute romantic caper; this humour can cause pain.

What makes this film different and sometimes vicious are the clever, effective dialogue, the sharply outlined characters and the fearless way in which the director portrays a woman’s road to self-destruction (and possibly liberation).

At times it’s satirical and even borders on gallows humour.

Recommended if you feel adventurous and in the mood for a movie that rocks – it’s exciting and daring but speaks the truth.
