The three were treated for drowning related symptoms, with the teenager being the most serious of the three.

A mysterious surfer has been hailed a hero after saving a woman, a teenager and an 8-month-old baby from drowning in Tongaat, Kwazulu-Natal paramedics said on Saturday.

A group of females from out of town were on the shoreline at Westbrook beach on Friday afternoon when they were knocked down and taken by a very large wave, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Nick Dollman.

Two adults made it back to shore. A woman, a 14-year-old girl and baby were in trouble in the white water.

“Thankfully, there were a few people around who noticed the commotion and summonsed help. The three were rescued by an unknown surfer who brought them safely to shore.”

Paramedics and lifeguards rushed to assist the group.

All five were taken to hospital for further treatment.

Dollman said that later in hospital, the women had described the surfer as “their angel who appeared out of nowhere and then disappeared a few minutes later when they were safe”.
