Natalie Portman has sought parenting advice from Cate Blanchett.

The 34-year-old actress and her husband Benjamin Millepied are parents to four-year-old son Aleph and Natalie has worked hard to get to grips with being a working mother. Leaning on her friends has been important, with Australian mother-of-four Cate one whose support has been invaluable.

“Very early on, I asked [Cate] about being a parent,” Natalie explained to Harper’s Bazaar magazine.

'You’re the best at what you do'

“I said, ‘How do you do it? You’re a mom. You’re the best at what you do.’ She said, ‘You just do. Stressing about it doesn’t help.’”

The star doesn’t see this as something which is the sole preserve of women either. It is usually ladies who are asked about juggling work and home life, but Natalie insists she has the same conversation with the guys she’s close to. Most of them are fearful about missing out on key moments with their kids too, so she believes it’s a conversation which both sexes need to be involved with.

The Oscar-winner spends much of her time in Paris now, as her husband is French. It allows her to fly under the radar more which she enjoys, but there are things which have been difficult to acclimatise to as well.

“It's magical," she explained, "but the cultures are different in ways you don't even realise. And there's stuff you don't know you'll miss until you're away. Like indoor gyms where kids can just run and jump. They don't have those there. [In Paris] if you're running around on the playground chasing your kid and playing a game, people think you're nuts.”

Life can be more serious in France too, with Natalie discovering that after a French friend of hers came back from a trip to Los Angeles and spoke about how much he missed having serious conversations. It made the star realise that unless she’s spent a dinner party debating, she no longer has that much fun.

Having big conversations is something the star is used to, as she was born in Jerusalem and is proud of her heritage. Although she’s never questioned it, it doesn’t stop others wanting to drill her on it.

“I get asked so many questions about the Middle East, and I'm like 'Can you please just ask me about my dress? Let's just talk about the dress!'” she laughed.
