US President Barack Obama and wife Michelle are set to visit local shores in June

American President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle plan to visit South Africa, Senegal and Tanzania from 26 June to 3 July to strengthen US ties with these countries.

“The trip will underscore the president’s commitment to broadening and deepening cooperation between the United States and the people of sub-Saharan Africa to advance regional and global peace and prosperity,” the White House said in a statement.

During Obama previous trip to Africa he spent only a few hours in Ghana.

The president has African roots – his father, Barack Obama Snr, was Kenyan. While the 51-year-old still has relatives in Kenya, he won’t be stopping by on this tour.

First lady Michelle Obama has been in SA before, in June 2011 when she met former president Nelson Mandela.
