Talk show queen and long-time friend of former president Nelson Mandela made a quiet entry into Qunu, ending speculation about whether she would attend Madiba’s funeral. In a statement, Oprah said one of the great honours of her life was to be invited to Nelson Mandela’s home, spending private time with him and getting to know him.  Oprah visited Madiba in his Qunu home in 2001. On her website, Oprah said upon her arrival, Madiba greeted her with a huge embrace while a spirited Graça ushered her to a table set for an amazing feast – lamb stew, pork chops, seafood paella, and a traditional South African dish made with tripe.

'Here in his homeland, Mandela told me what spending 27 years in prison taught him about himself – and why there is one thing he has never feared'

“He was everything you've ever heard and more – humble and unscathed by bitterness. And he always loved to tell a good joke. Being in his presence was like sitting with grace and majesty at the same time. He will always be my hero. His life was a gift to us all.”

Sitting at Madiba’s feet as they shared a newspaper those many years ago, Oprah said she had literally sat at the feet of a giant.
