Ostrich Meatballs

These meatballs are a healthy take on traditional beef.

You’ll need:

Approximately 500 g Checkers Ostrich Co. ostrich mince



Mixed spice



3 sachets of tomato paste

1 can of red beans (drained)

Fresh chillies; according to taste

4 potatoes


½ cup of milk

For the meatballs, chop the onion, garlic and chillies. Flavour the mince with spice and mix in by hand. Mash the beans, add them to the mince, along with the other ingredients, and the chopped chillies, if using. Work all the ingredients into the mince by hand until thoroughly mixed. Roll the mince mixture into individual balls in the palms of your hands, and pan-fry until cooked all the way through.

For the mashed potatoes, add cubed potatoes to a pot of boiling water along with a good pinch of salt. When the potatoes are soft, drain the water and add butter and ½ a cup of milk. Mix together with a fork or potato masher.
