Our Mad Hatter’s wedding

She’s a spunky city slicker who lives in the limelight; he’s a quiet cattle farmer who prefers the peacefulness of nature.

Yet judging by the loving glances and hand-holding these two are proof opposites attract.

All Access presenter and former 5FM DJ Koula (29) and her husband, Eastern Cape farmer Peter John (PJ) Budler (29), are glowing with happiness after a two-week honeymoon in Argentina. They recently tied the knot at Muldersdrift in Gauteng and are showing off their wedding album to YOU.

The petite star and PJ had known each other just six months when he proposed – and they say it’s the best decision they’ve ever made. “I can say without a shadow of doubt PJ is the man I was meant to marry,” Koula says.

They were introduced by a mutual friend at a church in Joburg – “divine intervention”, as they call it. And after one date they knew they were meant for each other, Koula says.

“We both knew marrying was right even though we’d been dating for such a short time,” PJ says. “I believe it was God’s will.”

It wasn’t easy to have a long-distance relationship – PJ was on his farm near Tarkastad, Eastern Cape, while Koula was in Joburg – but they spent long hours on the phone and he visited often.

After six months he knew the bubbly presenter was the woman he wanted to marry and although she was preparing to cover the glitzy South African Music Awards in April this year he called at her parents’ home to ask for her hand in marriage.

He then set off for Sun City, where the Sama event was held, to propose. “We were standing on the balcony of my hotel room, overlooking the lake,” Koula says. “I was dressed in an evening gown and he popped the question. It was beautiful.”

The couple will be based in Joburg, in Koula’s northern suburbs home, and will spend at least 10 days a month in the Eastern Cape. PJ will manage his farming operations in Tarkastad and Cullinan near Pretoria from Joburg. He exports beef and has business interests in Mauritius, he tells us.

“Johannesburg is probably the only place in the country where Koula and I can continue to do what we love without the other having to sacrifice their dreams,” he says.
