Have a look at the most photographed places on the planet.

Any tourist visiting Cape Town simply must take a picture of the city’s iconic Table Mountain or a selfie with Nelson Mandela on Nobel Square in the Waterfront.

Similarly a visit to Paris won’t be complete without a picture of the Eiffel Tower. But which of the world’s tourist destinations are the most popular?

An interactive map was recently published indicating which cities are photographed the most and which tourist attractions are the most popular.

Southern Africa's photo hotspots. Southern Africa's photo hotspots.

Based on Google’s Panoramio, Sightsmap uses heat spots to indicate where the most pictures in the world are taken. Panoramio lets users indicate the site of pictures they’ve taken on Google Maps. Yellow areas indicate were the most pictures have been taken, followed by orange, pink and purple areas. This enables you to see which cities and holiday destinations are the most popular.

The 10 most photographed cities are:

  1. New York, USA
  2. Rome, Italy
  3. Barcelona, Spain
  4. Paris, France
  5. Istanbul, Turkey
  6. Venice, Italy
  7. Monaco
  8. Florence, Italy
  9. Buenos Aires, Argentina
  10. Budapest, Hungary

Although no South African city is included on the list, the Cape Town Stadium is ranked 389th.
