Photos of a woman, supposedly holding bottles of alcohol while sitting in an Ekurhuleni Metro Police vehicle, went viral on social media at the weekend.

Three photographs circulating on Facebook and Twitter show a woman holding bottles of liquor while sitting behind the wheel of a vehicle with EMPD signage on it, Netwerk24 reported.

Chief Superintendant Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the EMPD, said they viewed the photos in a very serious light.

Meanwhile, a woman has claimed responsibility for the contentious photos on Facebook.

"My humble apologies to all," Tshidi Ford wrote, "I have caused a stir by sneaking into EMPD car while it was being washed an took pics. I'm really sorry, didn't mean any harm."

Kgasago said police have yet to identify the woman or a man sitting next to her in one photo.

“The photos are very damaging to the Metro Police’s [image].

“We do not know the people, but we take it very seriously. We examined the photos and will get to the bottom of it. We will see who the car belongs to.

“Even though the woman in the photos isn’t a Metro officer, she will be charged for this.”

Kgasago said when the officer responsible is found a hearing will be held and he could lose his job.

“We are shocked by these pictures,” he said.
