PJ Powers: Goodbye, demon drink

For years it was one of the best-kept secrets in show business. A successful singer who wowed audiences with rousing live performances and her powerful voice sobered up just long enough to entertain fans with favourites such as Jabulani and World in Union.

Very few people knew that when one of South Africa’s most famous stars left the stage she’d head home and drink glass after glass of vodka until she slipped into unconsciousness.

“I would drink it neat – nothing added – flinching at the horrible sharp taste,” PJ Powers says. The talented singer battled for years to control her intake of alcohol. “But I kept doing it every day until I passed out.”

PJ, who’s currently one of the judges on e.tv reality show Popstars, invited YOU to her new home in Fourways, Joburg, to speak openly about the demons that haunted her.

She has her life back on track, she says, and is finally ready to speak out. She also hopes her experiences will serve as a cautionary tale to others.

Her three-bedroom home is filled with eye-catching antiques and African collectibles. It’s light, breezy and warm – much like the star herself is feeling these days.

“My sobriety is a gift,” she says, sliding onto the comfy sofa in the open-plan lounge/dining room, a steaming cappuccino in hand. “I owe my life to my family, my partner, my sponsor and Alcoholics Anonymous.”
