Kechi Okwuchi was a teenager when she was involved in a horrific plane crash that took the lives of 107 people.

The Nigerian native is the only living survivor of the Sosoliso plane crash in 2005. It left her with third-degree burns over 65 percent of her body. While recovering in her hospital bed at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg the young woman used music as an escape.

After that harrowing experience, music became her way to cope. Kechi shared her story when she auditioned for America’s Got Talent and when she told the judges what happened they couldn't believe it.

Even Simon Cowell, who's notoriously known for being a bit stony-faced, was taken aback, even asking her, "How do you deal with something like that, Kechi?"

Her response?

"Lying in the hospital bed, bandaged head to foot and not able to move or do anything else, music way my escape and that’s why music means so much."

She wowed the judges and the crowd with her emotional rendition of Thinking Out Loud by British singer Ed Sheeran. It instantly reduced model and judge Heidi Klum to tears and elicited a standing ovation from Simon.
