Lucas the police dog is being hailed a hero after he saved the life of a sheriff's deputy after he was dragged into the woods in an ambush attack.

'They told him they were going to slit his throat'

Earlier in the week, Sheriff's Deputy Todd Frazier, from Mississippi, pulled over to check on a car when he noticed that the man in the front seat appeared to be passed out and the lights were off.

At that instant, two men appeared nearby as the ‘passed out’ driver got out of the car and ambushed him, before they all dragged Todd into the nearby woods.

"They told him they were going to slit his throat, and they were dragging him toward the woods," said Chief Deputy Don Bass.

Luckily, Todd was able to unlock the back of his squad car by pressing a release button on his keychain, freeing Lucas.

Immediately sensing that his partner was in trouble, Lucas came to Todd’s rescue.

The dog bit at least one of the attackers before they ran off in the car Todd had tried to inspect.

He was taken to a local hospital and released.

A man hunt is on for the three attackers.
