The staggering sum is expected to be offered by bidders when the "fairytale" white gown ? created by her wedding dress designers, husband-and-wife team David and Elizabeth Emanuel ? goes up for auction in London on Tuesday.

Diana's most "loved" dress features gold sequins, crystals, pearls and comes complete with a matching headband, optional sleeves and a petticoat.

Kerry Taylor Auctions ? who also sold the sheer black dress worn by the Duchess of Cambridge in her university fashion show ? says the elaborate gown has a "pretty, fairytale-princess feel to it" while it "fitted her perfectly" and Di wore it on a number of occasions.

Diana handpicked the size 10 dress from the Red Cross benefit fashion show before wearing it to a banquet at the German Ambassador's residence in London in July 1986 and to see Ivan the Terrible by the Bolshoi Ballet at the Royal Opera House later that month.

The blonde beauty also wore it a year later to the premiere of the James Bond film The Living Daylights in Leicester Square in June 1987.
