A silk tie once owned by the late Princess Diana is expected to fetch £3 000 (R45 000) when it goes on auction.

The navy blue Escada tie ? with its pattern of gold elephants ? was worn by Diana when she went to St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, London, to see her newborn baby nephew Louis, Viscount Althorp, in 1994. The royal then sent the garment to a friend's daughter to wear for a job interview.

The tie ? which comes in its original gold gift wrap with a note which reads "Lots of love, from Diana" and is accompanied by a photograph of Diana wearing it on the hospital visit ? is included in royal memorabilia being sold by Colchester auctioneers Reeman Dansie on 18 June.

Also included in the auction are three Valentine's Day cards Diana sent to the same family she bequeathed the tie to, showing a wooden teddy bear holding two heart balloons, a foil-covered chocolate heart and a foil-covered chocolate teddy.

The cards are signed by Diana ? the mother of Princes William and Harry ? with the message "Lots of love from Diana, William and Harry, X".

Each card sent by Diana ? who was killed in a Paris car crash in 1997 ? is expected to sell for between £300 (R4 500) and £500 (R7 500) each.
