This home-grown talent caught our eye in Spud 2: The Madness Continues! Meet 20-year-old actress Alex McGregor.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Sea Point, Cape Town. I have two older sisters, Lauren and Tamara. They are 12 and 13 years older than me. I’m the laatlammetjie. My parents [Ian and Audrey] say I was a pleasant surprise!

Are you the only actress in your family?

My sister Lauren acts too.

When did you know you wanted to become an actress?

When I was three my sister Lauren played Rizzo in her school’s production of Grease: The Musical. I joined everyone on stage during one of their rehearsals and afterwards I ran straight to my parents and said, “I want to be an actress!”

Tell us more about your role in Spud 2.

My character, Christine, was mentioned only in the second Spud book, but they wrote scenes for me in the movie. Christine is naughty and feisty. She loves all boys, but always has an eye on Spuddy.

Who was your BFF on set?

Everyone. The Spud cast is one, big happy family! We’re all super-close.

What do you do in your spare time?

I like to sing, dance and draw when I can, spend time with friends and family, do bikram yoga and squeeze in a gym session (because I really love cake).

What songs are you listening to at the moment?

I’m loving The Great Gatsby soundtrack – A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got) and Bang Bang are two really awesome tracks. I’m also obsessed with Get Lucky by Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams.

Who’s your inspiration or role model?

Charlize Theron for obvious reasons. I really hope I get to work with her one day.

What’s next?

I just finished shooting Young Ones, an American sci-fi film, and I had the opportunity to act alongside Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Michael Shannon. It was incredible. I’m shooting two movies in June and July: Spud 3 and another local movie called Echo Beach in which I’m the lead.

Did you hang out with Elle Fanning on the set of Young Ones?

Yes, we were together often! She’s absolutely lovely and down to earth. She makes me think of rainbows and unicorns. She’s super-tall and very mature for a 15-year-old. I often forgot about her age but every now and then she’d say something like, “I can’t wait to play with my dolls!” It was really sweet.

What were your best and worst subjects at school?

My favourite was biology. I wasn’t a fan of Afrikaans but I worked my butt off and got an A for matric!

Do you have any hidden talents?

I can touch my nose with my tongue and fit my fist in my mouth. Not sure if that’s a talent though! (laughs).

Do you have a nickname?

My friends call me Scrat – it’s the name of the crazy, acorn-obsessed squirrel in Ice Age. Apparently we pull the same funny faces.

What’s the one thing you’re totally addicted to?

Cupcakes. And peanut butter.

If you weren’t an actress, what would you be?

A fairy.

Who would play you in a movie about your life?

I love Chloë Moretz!
