"It's a huge relief for the entire family," his brother Mark said.

Former Bafana Bafana captain Neil Tovey was discharged from hospital on Sunday, a week after suffering a heart attack.

Tovey, who is the South African Football Association’s technical director, suffered the heart attack during a training session last Sunday and was rushed to hospital.

The attack occurred just days after Neil's youngest daughter Jessica Tovey was announced as one of the Miss South Africa 2017 semi-finalists.

But the 54-year-old was released on Sunday, Bafana Bafana and SAFA confirmed via social media.

"This is a miracle; SAFA TD Neil Tovey has been discharged from hospital exactly a week after suffering a heart attack," read a Tweet on Bafana Bafana's official Twitter account.

His brother Mark Tovey had told SAFA’s official website on Saturday:

"He underwent blood tests this morning (Saturday) for doctors to determine his progress. He took a shower and had a short walk.

“The doctors have confirmed that he will be discharged either Sunday or Monday and that is a huge relief for the entire family. This is an incredible story and once again I would like to thank all South Africans for their prayers; this has been like a miracle," said Mark.

Neil previously suffered a cardiac arrest in February 2015, but recovered sufficiently to accept his post at SAFA.

He made 52 appearances for Bafana Bafana, captaining the national side on 29 occasions, including when they won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil.
