Robert De Niro has been hit with a $6.4 million tax lien.

According to city documents found by the Smoking Gun website, the 71-year-old actor owes a total of $6,410,449.20 (R73, 8 million)to the US Government.

However, paying the lien shouldn’t be too much of an issue as Robert is worth an estimated $200 million (R2 billion).

In addition to his well-respected movie career, which has seen him win two Oscars, Robert also has stakes in various properties in Los Angeles and London.

In his home city of New York, Robert has stakes in the restaurants Nobu and TriBeCa Grill, The Greenwich Hotel and TriBeCa Productions.

He also founded the Tribeca Film Festival, which has become one of the world’s leading events of its kind, and has widely been credited for helping the Tribeca neighbourhood regain its reputation following the 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York.

While Robert has his fair share of property investments, he actually rents his main abode in New York.

Living in Central Park West, Robert spends a staggering $125,000 (R 1, 5 million) per month on his apartment – one of New York’s most expensive rentals.

The Smoking Gun reported that the lien was issued back in November with the New York Department of Finance.

The documents come just as it was revealed that Robert will be adding another string to his bow by co-directing a stage musical version of his hit film A Bronx Tale.

Alongside Jerry Zaks, Robert will work to ensure the adaptation of the 1993 movie is as successful as its predecessor.

According to a description for the show, it will “follow a young Italian-American teenager finding his path in life as guided by two father figures”.

The show will open at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse later this year.
