Robot wins every time

Japanese scientists have developed a robot with such fast responses that it always wins the hand game rock-paper-scissors against a person.

The Janken robot, named after the game’s Japanese name, was developed at the Ishikawa Oku Laboratory at the University of Tokyo. This robot is faster than a previous version, which was developed about a year ago by the same team.

The robot’s lightning-fast responses are thanks to its high-speed recognition and reaction capability, rather than prediction abilities. Janken responds at virtually the instant its opponent does.

It takes just one millisecond (a thousandth of a second) to recognise the shape its opponent makes and respond with its winning move. The first version of the robot took 20 milliseconds.
