It’s Saturday morning and the upmarket sensuality boutique in the affluent Johannesburg suburb is a hive of activity.

It’s the first time many of the shoppers – most of them middle-class women aged 19 to 50 – have been inside a sex shop, let alone purchased a sex toy.

But it seems the phenomenon of the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy (YOU, 5 July), is leading women everywhere to express their interest in sexuality in a bolder way.

Since May 2011 the three erotic bestsellers – 50 Shades of Grey, 50 Shades Darker and 50 Shades Freed – have sold more than 40 million paperback copies worldwide.

In South Africa demand for the books, which have been on Exclusive Books’ bestseller list for two months, has left local distributors struggling to keep up with orders.
